Most new dog owners start out Crate Training their dogs. Their puppy or new pet, sleep, rest and eat in their crate. They go in and out during the day when they want some down time. They usually even have a favorite toy or comfortable blanket to cuddle with. Then, just when our dogs are feeling so safe and secure with their crate, we the humans do the worst possible thing !! We take it away! Yes, we think our pet no longer needs it because they no longer chew our furniture or have accidents on our carpet. That is because we as humans, think that a crate is like jail to our pet and that it is cruel to keep them in it. We couldn’t be more wrong ! Our dogs loved their crates. It was a secure place for them to be. It was a place they could go when the household got a little loud or too many people were running around. They can even start to become anxious when we leave them alone during the day, sometimes to the point of being destructive to our furniture and are carpets again. Then we call a trainer and say-I don’t know what happened to my Good Dog! Remember, our dogs don’t just change. They react to something the human has changed ! |

Your dog cannot understand the human vocabulary. Although sometimes it may seem like he does, he is really reacting to your body posture. Your dog watches everything you do and reacts accordingly. Teach your dog one word commands such as Here! Sit ! Stay in conjunction with an appropriate hand signal. Always start the command with your dog’s name to attract his attention. Avoid repeating the command over and over, you will just confuse him. When he complies, be enthusiastic and generous with your praise ! He will want to do it again and again if he knows it pleases you !! |
